Participants are required to be
- 21 years of age
- fluent in English or Spanish
- physically able to make long treks, cross rivers, and work in difficult terrain
- willing to work as part of a team
- able to show proof of travel insurance
- willing to commit for at least 2 weeks
- passionate about wildlife, rainforests, insects, and all things natural
Food, lodging, and transportation are not included.
The National Volunteer Program is a program aimed towards Costa Ricans who wish to collaborate in the environmental education projects of the BioSur Foundation while contributing from the knowledge and skills of their fellow peers.
This program takes core approaches such as environmental education through workshops, from dramatic or pictorial art, among others, so it is aimed at students of the natural, social and dramatic sciences of public or private study centers.
Modality and requirements
- To be part of our volunteering program, each person must be fluent in Spanish, have the physical capacity to cross rivers and make prolonged walks, basic understanding of general Latin American culture, be able to work in a team and under supervision and have good interpersonal relationships skills.
- Being a volunteer program for nationals, the cost of it is very low, covering only the expenses of food, lodging and transportation in the work area.
- The period of volunteering will be agreed by the groups that are formed within the dates defined by the Foundation.
- The volunteer must study or be professional in branches of the Natural, Social or Dramatic Sciences, so it is essential to provide evidence of this.
- A legal contract will be made that commits both parties to the performance of volunteering.

The International Volunteer Program is aimed towards the international community who wish to collaborate with the BioSur Foundation on issues related to conservation and environmental education, in addition to knowing more about Costa Rica’s biodiversity as well as practicing the Spanish language.
The purpose of the IVP is to meet the needs that arise around the environment, whether in local communities, schools or colleges, through the delivery of workshops that will facilitate addressing issues related to conservation, pollution, deforestation, among others.
Our volunteers will also gain field work experience in the Río Nuevo Private Reserve or surrounding places, performing projects such as placement and monitoring of camera traps, insect sampling, cleaning beaches, rivers and mangroves, among others. As well as, visit, meet or work in the Insectopia Collection in assembly of specimens, labeling and curatorship of the collection.

Program requirements
- For this program any international person may participate. Every participant is of legal age, fluent in the Spanish or English language, have the physical capacity to cross rivers and make prolonged walks, basic understanding of general Latin American culture, be able to perform teamwork under supervision and have good interpersonal relationships.
- This volunteer program is designed for short periods, to be agreed upon with the groups of volunteers without exceeding five nights and six days. In addition, the BioSur Foundation will facilitate the work to be carried out at your convenience in certain established periods of the day, so the rest of the day, the volunteer will carry out activities of interest outside those assigned by the Foundation
- Volunteering includes breakfast, snack, lunch or dinner according to the schedule that is established with respect to the activity you want to perform, for example, if a river is cleaned from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., only breakfast and a snack will be provided.
The Scientific Volunteer Program is a program aimed at the local and international scientific community with the purpose of working on the sampling of species and in the laboratories of the BioSur Foundation to generate scientific knowledge about the biodiversity of the Osa Peninsula and the Golfo Dulce region.
This program will allow the development of graduate work or will enhance the creation of recognized scientific articles that will be uploaded to the BioSur Foundation’s reference databases.
Requirements
- This volunteering program may be joined by any national or international professional who studies or has an academic degree related to the interests of the BioSur Foundation, in addition they must have a basic level of Spanish or English. As well as, be able to work with a team in a city under supervision and have good interpersonal communication skills.
- The length of this volunteering program will be agreed with a minimum period of two weeks.
- This volunteer program requires great effort and performance, its cost will include food and lodging.
- A contract must be made with the provisions of the BioSur Foundation so that everything is protected by law.
